How Are Seamless Steel Pipes Made? Manufacturing Process Explained

Seamless steel pipes have no welded joints and are mainly manufactured from solid round billets through a series of processes, including heating, piercing, rolling, sizing, heat treatment, and inspection. Compared with welded steel pipes, the manufacturing process is more complex and requires higher-quality raw materials and more advanced production equipment.

I. Main Manufacturing Process of Seamless Steel Pipes

1. Billet Heating

Production begins with the selection of round billets that meet the applicable standard requirements. The billets are uniformly heated in a heating furnace to bring them to a temperature suitable for plastic deformation.

If the heating temperature is too low, piercing becomes more difficult. If the temperature is too high, it may cause grain coarsening and excessive oxidation. Therefore, the heating temperature and heating time must be strictly controlled.

2. Piercing

The heated solid round billet enters a piercing mill, where rollers and a piercing plug create a hollow cavity through the center of the billet, transforming the solid billet into a hollow shell.

Piercing is one of the most critical processes in seamless steel pipe manufacturing.

The quality of the piercing process directly affects the subsequent wall thickness uniformity, concentricity, and internal quality of the steel pipe.

3. Rolling and Sizing

After piercing, the hollow shell undergoes rolling and elongation to gradually bring its outside diameter and wall thickness closer to the required product dimensions.

The pipe then undergoes sizing or reducing to further control:

  • Dimensional tolerances

For products requiring higher dimensional accuracy, cold drawing or cold rolling may be used for further processing.

4. Heat Treatment

Heat treatment is primarily used to improve the internal microstructure of the steel pipe so that it achieves the specified:

5. Straightening and Cutting
